Iridology is the process by which the iris of the eye is examined using iris charts which divide the iris into zones that correspond to specific parts of the human body. Dr. Ignaz von Peczely, a 19th century Hungarian physician, is considered to be the founding father as he noticed similar streaks in the iris of a man he was treating for a broken leg and the iris of an owl he had nursed back to good health after breaking its leg when trying to release it from a trap in his garden, at the age of 11.
Practitioners believe that Iridology testing is a means to use the eyes as a window into the body’s state of health. The charts are used to distinguish between healthy systems and those that are compromised and/or inflamed, hyperactive or distressed. Additionally, the test can be used to determine past health issues or susceptibility to certain illnesses and the potential towards developing future health problems. In some countries, it is the first protocol in determining diagnosis before hospitalization.
While skeptics say that Iridology is not evidenced-based medicine, iridologists believe that patterns, colors and other characteristics about the eye hold valuable information about a person’s systemic health.
